On a grey, sodden day at Alcast Park, Enniscorthy fell 12–40 to a clinical Sligo side, in a match that will have the home side scratching their heads and searching for answers.
Playing into the wind in the first half, Enniscorthy were immediately under pressure, and Sligo took full advantage—crossing for the opening try after just six minutes. Missed tackles, Enniscorthy's achilles heel all season, again proved costly as the visitors cut through too easily.
To their credit, Enniscorthy responded really well. Strong work from the pack set up a well-constructed maul, and Davie Murphy was on hand to steer it over the line for an important try. However, the momentum didn’t hold. Sligo struck twice more before the break, one score coming from a punishing intercept, giving them a commanding 19–5 lead at half-time.
The second half began with far more balance. Enniscorthy tightened their defence and worked their way back into the contest. Their perseverance paid off in the 59th minute when they crossed to narrow the gap to 19–12, suddenly putting the game back in the melting pot and lifting the home crowd.
But just as Enniscorthy had gotten themselves back into the game, they were on the back foot again. Straight from the restart, Enniscorthy conceded a needless penalty. Sligo kicked to the corner, set their maul, and powered over—restoring a 14-point gap at 26–12 with seventeen minutes left. That score proved decisive. The energy drained from the Enniscorthy challenge, and Sligo capitalised, adding two more tries in the final quarter to seal an emphatic 40–12 win.
A tough day on home turf for Enniscorthy, who will be eager to move on quickly and regroup ahead of their final fixture before Christmas against UL Bohs.
The club would like to congratulate senior players James Doyle and Rhyan Whelan who were part of the Davidstown Leinster winning hurlers on Sunday last. Well done lads!
