Enniscorthy and Monkstown served up an exhilarating encounter in Sydney Parade on Saturday, with the hosts emerging victorious 40-29 in a match that came alive in the second half. Enniscorthy were heading into the game on something of a hot streak having won the previous 4 games, and were certainly in no mood to let the winning streak stop.
The game started with a strong defensive effort from both sides, as neither team was able to break the deadlock in the opening exchanges. Monkstown looked the more threatening early on, but Enniscorthy held firm, forcing turnovers and keeping the visitors at bay. The first half was a tense, tactical affair, with both teams showing solid structure but struggling to turn possession into points.
The breakthrough came when Liam Stamp crossed the line for Enniscorthy, closely followed by a try from Tony Ryan, putting the hosts in the lead. However, Monkstown responded immediately with a well-taken try of their own, leveling the score at 12-12 as the teams headed to the break. It was clear that the second half would be a much more open affair.
The game exploded into life after halftime, with Dominik Morycki putting Enniscorthy ahead just minutes after the restart. Jack Kelly added to the lead shortly thereafter, followed by a brilliant try from Timmy Morrissey, giving the home side a comfortable 27-12 advantage. The visitors were reeling, but Monkstown showed their resilience and fought hard to get back into the game.
Despite their best efforts, Monkstown’s response was insufficient, and the game remained in Enniscorthy's hands. A late try from Tony Ryan — his second of the day — sealed the victory for the hosts, ending the match at 40-29.
It was a superb performance in the second half from Enniscorthy, who capitalized on their superior attacking play. A cracking game of rugby, full of drama, tries, and plenty of excitement for the fans.
Enniscorthy now have a break for Xmas with the AIL returning to Alcast Park on Saturday, January 11th 2025, where they will play Monkstown in the reverse fixture. An encounter that is sure to produce a similar spectacle as Saturday last.
