In an intense clash at Spollanstown Lane, Enniscorthy and Tullamore battled to a hard-fought 25-25 draw. Both teams displayed resilience, but discipline issues plagued the match, with a staggering 18 points given away from penalties, highlighting a challenging day for Enniscorthy.
From the outset, Enniscorthy showcased some impressive attacking phases, demonstrating their ability to break through Tullamore's defense. Their forward pack set a solid platform, winning crucial lineouts and scrums, allowing the backs to express themselves. The Enniscorthy backs produced some eye-catching plays, resulting in 3 of the 4 tries being scored out wide by our back three, Davie Murphy crossed for the 4th.
However, Enniscorthy's discipline again came under scrutiny. A series of penalties allowed Tullamore to stay in the game, capitalizing on the opportunities presented to them, with New Zealander Josh Huddleston clinical from the tee, ensuring that they remained in contention throughout the match.
Despite the discipline problems, there were many positives for Enniscorthy to take from the game. The forwards were particularly effective in the set pieces, and their aggressive defense managed to disrupt Tullamore’s rhythm at times. The young talents in the squad also showed great potential, with a couple of standout performances that will give the coaching staff plenty to ponder as the season progresses.
As the final whistle blew, both teams had to settle for a draw, which from an Enniscorthy perspective didn't accurately reflect the 80 minute performance, however, they will be disappointed with the penalties conceded. The impressive elements of their play indicate a team heading in the right direction, if they can sharpen their discipline.
Looking ahead, Enniscorthy will need to focus on their discipline and reduce the number of penalties if they hope to climb the league table. Building on the positive aspects of their performance will be key as they prepare for their next fixture at home to Midleton on the 19th October - here's hoping a return to Alcast Park will see a return to winning ways.
